ABOUT ME

Emilie Clemmens, PhD is a grant review specialist, educator, and former lab scientist. Raised in Kentucky, she headed West to pursue graduate work in bioengineering, completing a PhD at the University of Washington in Seattle. Postdoctoral work followed, along with many years as a science educator at area community colleges and at the University of Washington. For over 5 years, Dr. Clemmens was a Scientific Review Officer for GDIT, Inc., managing peer-review for the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs of the U.S. Department of Defense. She currently serves as adjunct faculty in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Kentucky, having returned home to where her twin passions for science and effective communication were kindled.

I'm here because I enjoy telling a good story. Your work, your science, is a great story–one that isn’t finished. The passion you have for discovery, the long hours you've devoted to unlocking hidden truths, and the questions you still need to answer--all of this has led you to seek funding to keep on digging, to continue the tale and realize its full import.

Trouble is, of course, the pot of money is limited, and you need your story to rise above the rest.

As a Scientific Review Officer, I managed the peer-review process of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs of the U.S. Department of Defense, and I observed how your peers critiqued each application--what scored well, and what didn't. A consistent issue for those with poorer scores was the lack of a well-structured, coherent, consistent, and engaging story.

As a scientist, educator, and grants management professional, I've learned to never take for granted the value of effective communication. Whether presenting my data, writing manuscripts, teaching students to communicate effectively, or constructing summaries for grant applicants, I've always kept in mind that reaching your audience is paramount.

I am now employing this unique combination of experiences and skills to help you tell your story in a way that will captivate your peers. I want them to experience your zeal, witness your dedication, and admire your focused and apt approach. I also want to help you ensure that no detail has been missed, that you craft an error-free application compliant with the funding opportunity, so your story doesn't get tripped up by roadblocks or lost in the system.

You have all the elements of a strong proposal, but we’ve all experienced the blindness of being too close to something to view it clearly. I offer a dispassionate and fresh set of eyes with the expertise to identify those pieces that may need a bit of clarification or tidying.
